In the spring of 2022, Union eighth grade science teacher Tamarah Danzy received a national Milken Educator Award and won $25,000, receiving her trophy later in the fall.
“I already have a place in mind,” Danzy joked, still fighting a few tears of joy after she dedicated her Milken Educator obelisk to her dad, Primus Moore, a retired teacher himself who taught science for 42 years.
Primus Moore and her mother, Veronica Moore, along with one of her daughters, Lailah Danzy, got to witness the special occasion when 2018 Oklahoma Milken Educator winner Hailey Couch, an innovative learning coach with Norman Public Schools, presented the trophy to her in class.
Other special guests included Union Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler, Assistant Superintendent Sandi Calvin, Executive Director of Secondary Education Dr. Kenneth Moore, Principal Michelle Cundy and other members of the administrative and teaching staff.
Couch said later, “The most special guests were her parents! It was absolutely precious and there was not a dry eye in the audience. She is an incredible educator and it was such a privilege to see her in her natural element- in her classroom. It was evident why she received the Milken Educator Award last year. Tamarah is extremely passionate about teaching and deeply cares about her students. She’s an inspiration.”
“Tamarah believes in every one of her students and motivates them to master essential skills needed in science and engineering,” said then State Secretary of Education Joy Hofmeister, when she surprised Danzy with the honor last spring. “She prepares her young learners to be ready for college and career through engaging, hands-on lessons that they can build on in high school, and she challenges them to research and discover on their own. Tamarah is a model teacher in Oklahoma. We are so delighted that she has been recognized as a Milken Educator.”
